Video: Pol Pot Interviewed by Nate Thayer (1997)
Pol Pot led the Khmer Rouge regime which killed an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians through starvation, disease and deliberate murder. After provoking Vietnam to invade Cambodia in 1979 he continued to lead what remained of the Khmer Rouge in the territory it controlled near the Thai border, until his own organization arrested him for the murder of one of his closest comrades, Son Sen, whom Pol Pot suspected of plotting against him. During his trial, the year before he died (apparently from natural causes) he gave this interview to the journalist Nate Thayer, admitting mistakes but evading responsibility for the crimes of his regime.The video is available in two installments:
