ISCI is a cross-disciplinary research centre working to further our understanding of state crime: organisational deviance violating human rights

Legal intern position

The International State Crime Initiative (ISCI) is looking for an intern to lead a project on informal settlement rights in Papua New Guinea. In particular, the position will require a review of existing legislation and case law relating to informal settler rights on state land in Papua New Guinea; this work is set in a context where long-standing informal settlements are being summarily evicted from state land through organised state-violence. It is envisaged that the review will produce a worker paper, published jointly by ISCI and its civil society partner, Act Now.

This project is part of a broader research programme designed to produce data on mass forced evictions, and buttress UN guiding principles.

It is expected that the intern will have a legal qualification, and is in good academic standing. No prior knowledge of Papua New Guinea is expected, training on the latter region will be provided by ISCI’s Dr Kristian Lasslett.
